PsiLoops Melody Menu Update

I was tasked with updating the PsiLoops melody set menu to reflect a new feature.

Previously, PsiLoops only had "public" audio loops that were downloaded from a server and available to everyone. These are considered "global" loops and that menu is now represented as a Globe icon on the menu page.

A new app update will allow for the user to do two things:

  1. Loop Editor: import a .wav file and clip out 8 bar samples
  2. Set Builder: Take the 8 bar samples and arrange them in a folder. 6 samples per folder. Then add this folder to the personal melody sets menu.

Within the menu, there is a globe icon representing the public sets. If you tap on it, the menu changes to the personal sets menu represented by a files icon. This is a modified version of the main page files icon, so it is familiar to the user already as representing their own files.

The information displayed in this menu is different than the global sets menu. In personal sets, it is organized by set number, displays the set title (chosen by the user), and has a favorites selector and a selector for using the set within the app.

The user can use this menu to select the melody sets of loops that they created in the Set Builder. This is a new feature of the app that will greatly increase it's functionality and usefulness for users who want to use it to make music using their own samples such as vocals, recorded instruments, etc.

At the bottom of the page is a static menu bar with two buttons that direct the user to the Loop Editor or the Set Builder. This functionality is only available for users who subscribe, so there is a lock icon in the free version.

Outcome

It was a challenge figuring out how to fit the new melody sets in with the public sets while still differentiating them. The best answer was to keep them separate, because they show slightly different information. For example, global sets have recommended BPM and Genres, while personal sets don't need this information because the user already knows what genre and bpm because it's their music.

The next challenge was where to put the Loop Editor and Set Builder buttons. There's no room on the main page and logically didn't make as much sense being there. Originally it they were placed in the main page Info button page but this was out of the way and again not logical. The best option was to place it somewhere on the melody loop menu, because it's a melody loop editor and set builder.

Seeing as there's not much room on the menu, I decided a static container at the bottom of the page holding the buttons was the best bet. Unless the user has a lot of personal sets made, it won't interfere with their personal sets. It's quick and easy to access, unintrusive, and intuitive.

This was just part one of designing a new feature update for PsiLoops.

The next step is to design the Loop Editor and Set Builder pages.
